White Pelicans are very social creatures and like to stay together whether in the air or on the ground.
Welcoming the fall arrival of White Pelicans in Florida Bay!

White Pelicans love to fly close and low to the water like an undulating roller coaster over Florida Bay!

They are among the largest of all birds, with a wingspan upwards of 9 feet and also some of the heaviest. Each year they like to over-winter in the southern states but actually breed during the summer up north.

The Time-release Dose – Voices of shellers shrouded in fog.

A blanket of fog covered the sandbar as I was

waking up hearing strange voices in the mist.

The fog would not deter the shellers from their mission.

At times the fog was so thick that we could only hear the voices in the mist! The place was suddenly full of people, wading and shelling the shoreline and tidal flats. The shellers were busy picking and seemed oblivious to our presence on the sandbar. So I set out to investigate and find their origin.

The Time-release Dose – Fogged out in the Ten Thousand Islands.

Ten Thousand Islands kayaking series:

Second Chance sandbar shrouded in fog, January 2022.

Taking time to explore these sand shoals we were treated to a rare experience of complete fog out. At times it was so thick that we could only hear the voices in the mist!

The so called “Second Chance” sandbar is an ever changing and dynamic collection of shifting sands in Gullivan Bay. There can be one, two or more small splintered off sandbars just barely above the high tide line. The area lies about a mile southeast off the tip of Cape Romano. It is a part of the Rookery Bay Research Reserve and Second Chance is also a designated Critical Wildlife Area (CWA). As such, access is restricted with the entire area closed off from March 1st to August 31, or whenever nesting birds leave. This helps to insure that the many species of shorebirds have a place to nest free of mainland predators and people!

“A view to a Chill” – good morning from Little Rabbit Key in Florida Bay!

There is  an irresistible allure  to the  keys hovering on the horizon

as if mirages, but they are real places!

Florida Bay is a large body of water bordered by Everglades National Park to the north, and Florida’s Keys along with the Gulf Stream ocean current to the south. Covering over 800 square miles, it forms a roughly triangular shape about 40 miles wide from east to west. From north to south, it tapes out from six miles in the east to 25 miles on it’s western edge with the Gulf of Mexico. Almost all of the ‘Bay, as it is called locally, is a part of Everglades National Park, and has been protected since the Park’s inception in 1947. Within it’s boundaries, there are about 100 small islands or keys. Very few of these have any actual dry land; most are just clumps of mangroves and mud barely standing above sea level. But they are all full of life.

The Daily Dose – Ten Thousand little messengers from Hell at Pavilion Key.

This picturesque sandy isle in the Ten Thousand Islands first drew blood with it’s namesake.

Today it continues to draw blood by way of mosquitos – well sometimes anyway.

Campers beware! 😉

“Ten Thousand little messengers from Hell at Pavilion Key”

Camping Hell in the Ten Thousand Islands.

.

Pavilion Key is a popular island campsite in the Ten Thousand Islands, inside Everglades National Park. While the beach camping is very nice, the island also hosts a surprisingly large mosquito population for an offshore island. At night in the darkness when the stars are out and the wind drops, it’s not necessarily a silent night! Protected inside the inner sanctum of my tent, I hear a roar of skeeters overhead – buzzing about for hours until a breeze picks up again!

The island’s name harks back two hundred years to a cruel twist of fate for a young blonde virgin who was imprisoned for a time inside a pavilion made of logs and palm fronds on the isle. She was the only “survivor” of a raid on a Dutch merchant vessel by the pirate captain Charles Gibbs. The rest of the ship’s occupants and crew were murdered out on the sea, while she was brought back to this island pirate camp presumably as a sex slave for the captain. Eventually the rest of the crew grew tired of the captain keeping a live witness to their crimes and forced their leader to surrender the girl’s fate. She was reportedly poisoned* in her meal and died an agonizing, slow death. Not long after, the US schooner Porpoise discovered the as yet uncharted island and found her recent grave and the pavilion structure.

Thus the name Pavilion Key!

The Daily Dose – South Florida’s stormy transition into fall.

Day or night, early fall weather can be a real wildcard for paddlers in South Florida!

As the world turns, the season changes from the summertime afternoon squall pattern to regular cold fronts coming down from the northeast. Nestled in between there is early fall in South Florida which is still hot as summer but not nearly as predictable.

The nights especially can put on quite a show!

The Daily Dose – Pentax 300mm ED IF telephoto lens test and the power of nudity at a distance!

I happened to catch a humorous moment in time, taking place about one kilometer away from me. 😉

.

Although I did not realize it at the time, here I captured the power of nudity at a distance!

SMC Pentax 645 A star 300mm f/4 ED IF lens with Pentax KP DSLR.

On an outing to the vast expanses of Florida Bay, inside Everglades National Park, I brought along a recent acquisition to test out:

The SMC Pentax 645 A star 300mm f/4 ED IF lens.

This is a manual focus lens produced in the 80s and 90s for Pentax’s 645 medium format film camera system. It’s easy enough to adapt this lens to a digital SLR cam, in my case the APS-C format Pentax KP. This results in a little more reach, the equivalent of 450mm in 35mm “FF” format. This is a very, very sharp and useful lens even if a bit on the large side, since it was made to cover the much larger 645 image format. On APS-C format only the center area is used, the results are really quite good. Being a lens with ED elements, there is no fringing nor other optical aberrations even wide open and the IF (internal focus) allows quick, easy and up close focusing action. I look forward to making extensive use of this fine lens!
