The Daily Dose – Something is missing in this picture!

Birds hang out on the Johnson Key Chickee roof all the time. In fact most of the structure can be covered in guano at times. Always bring several tarps!
Hurricane Irma impacts on the Johnson Key Chickee in Florida Bay.

OK, it’s simple – the Porta Potty is gone with the wind. The strong wind from Hurricane Irma, that is – never to be seen again! This picture was taken just after the hurricane and before the Johnson Key Chickee was reopened for camping. Note the birds, indicating that it is somewhat covered in bird guano. But sometimes all is not as it may seem!

This 12 mile round trip also served as “sea trials” to see how my customized Trident 11, aka “Pa-Hay-Okee” would handle actual open water conditions. As it were, that particular day was a lil windy, with a brisk cold front bringing cool north winds of about 15 – 18 knots. I got to paddle my little boat six miles downwind and six miles back upwind! I have to say, that while no sea kayak, this boat handles and tracks reasonably well for a short 11.5 foot SOT kayak. She responds well to limited edging (by her width) and picks up swells to ride easily. I used a wing paddle exclusively and it was a good combination. I just had to watch out a little for the “catch”. I also gained good insight into what casual paddlers in sit on top kayaks (or other short boats) would face when paddling in open water conditions like this!

“A view to a Chill” – good morning from Little Rabbit Key in Florida Bay!

There is  an irresistible allure  to the  keys hovering on the horizon

as if mirages, but they are real places!

Florida Bay is a large body of water bordered by Everglades National Park to the north, and Florida’s Keys along with the Gulf Stream ocean current to the south. Covering over 800 square miles, it forms a roughly triangular shape about 40 miles wide from east to west. From north to south, it tapes out from six miles in the east to 25 miles on it’s western edge with the Gulf of Mexico. Almost all of the ‘Bay, as it is called locally, is a part of Everglades National Park, and has been protected since the Park’s inception in 1947. Within it’s boundaries, there are about 100 small islands or keys. Very few of these have any actual dry land; most are just clumps of mangroves and mud barely standing above sea level. But they are all full of life.

Know where?

Nowhere and now here!

Across Florida Bay is about 25 – 30 miles each way, so it’s possible to do this roundtrip in two days. However, chances are you might get stranded on one of the flats banks because the tide models inverse about half way through to the Keys. Also, you might just miss out on all those little things along the way, so my advice is to ‘slow it down’ brothers and sisters!

You are truly in ‘the middle of nowhere’ out on Florida Bay!

The Daily Dose – I was held hostage for hours at First National Bank.

First National Bank on Florida Bay, that is!

.

The stick up job at the Bank.
The hold up at First National Bank in Florida Bay!

.

The hold up was the tide, or lack there of.

The stick up job was my pole aerial photography!

First National Bank appears to have been named in jest by Flamingo residents of old (along with many other funny names). There are several other ‘banks’, but First National is very interesting due to it’s geographical position in Florida Bay and the thousands of birds that make a living out there.

The bank is located in Western Florida Bay which experiences extreme tidal swings and huge sections of flats can get exposed for several hours. They can easily be several miles across.

It’s very easy to get stuck out here accidentally, so it’s best to always be crossing with a rising tide! For planning, go with the East Cape tide models.

Don’t try walking across the bank – it’s really slick soft mud, almost like quicksand. It will tear the shoes off your feet .. best to wait it out!

When the water fills back in – it’s time to GO!

The Daily Dose – South Florida’s stormy transition into fall.

Day or night, early fall weather can be a real wildcard for paddlers in South Florida!

As the world turns, the season changes from the summertime afternoon squall pattern to regular cold fronts coming down from the northeast. Nestled in between there is early fall in South Florida which is still hot as summer but not nearly as predictable.

The nights especially can put on quite a show!

The Daily Dose – Pentax 300mm ED IF telephoto lens test and the power of nudity at a distance!

I happened to catch a humorous moment in time, taking place about one kilometer away from me. 😉

.

Although I did not realize it at the time, here I captured the power of nudity at a distance!

SMC Pentax 645 A star 300mm f/4 ED IF lens with Pentax KP DSLR.

On an outing to the vast expanses of Florida Bay, inside Everglades National Park, I brought along a recent acquisition to test out:

The SMC Pentax 645 A star 300mm f/4 ED IF lens.

This is a manual focus lens produced in the 80s and 90s for Pentax’s 645 medium format film camera system. It’s easy enough to adapt this lens to a digital SLR cam, in my case the APS-C format Pentax KP. This results in a little more reach, the equivalent of 450mm in 35mm “FF” format. This is a very, very sharp and useful lens even if a bit on the large side, since it was made to cover the much larger 645 image format. On APS-C format only the center area is used, the results are really quite good. Being a lens with ED elements, there is no fringing nor other optical aberrations even wide open and the IF (internal focus) allows quick, easy and up close focusing action. I look forward to making extensive use of this fine lens!

The Galilean moons were the first ever objects found to orbit another world by Galileo Galilei in the spring of 1610!

They were named after the lovers of the Greek God Zeus, by German astronomer Simon Marius  at the suggestion of Johannes Kepler. Marius independently sighted these worlds in the same time frame as Galileo.

Improvements in telescope optics and design made by Galileo enabled a magnification factor of 20x which incidentally is the same as my photography setup with a 1000mm reflex lens (20 x 50mm standard view)!

To fully appreciate the Everglades winter sky experience, it is worthwhile to paddle out to one of the remote backcountry campsites inside the Park, the Ten Thousand Islands or Florida Bay. The western coastline along the Gulf of Mexico is the best to get farther away from city light pollution.

It’s easy to see why the Everglades has some of the darkest skies – you’re about as far away from all the lights as you can get.

Nearly full moon in early February 2017.

The penumbral lunar eclipse of February 10, 2017 generated a lot of interest. However, not being a total eclipse, it was not as impressive as the hype might lead one to believe!

We will have a partial lunar eclipse visible from the Everglades in January 2018 and a total eclipse a year later on January 21, 2019!

.

The weak penumbral lunar eclipse of February 10, 2017 only shows a slight darkening. However the reduced brightness helps to get a better image of the otherwise extremely bright “snow” full moon!

.

In the meantime, enjoy this total eclipse from 2015! 🙂
