Keep moving through the landscape ahead of the monsters!

That one Halloween we had on the

Taylor Slough of the Everglades.

The hungry ghost of a gator snaps at inquisitive paddlers.
Halloween on the Taylor Slough.

.

Grass paddling is a local Everglades specialty!

While free ranging is always possible, it’s usually best to save the energy by mostly sticking to (relatively) well established canoe and NPS airboat trails as much as possible. Poling, pushing, and paddling – it’s all good on the slough. This Halloween trip followed down the Taylor Slough and then the Craighead Pond Canoe Trail, eventually exiting at the Nine Mile Pond Canoe Trail. The upper part of Taylor Slough is a beautiful area, paddling amongst Cypress trees with mixed vegetation. Then the further south we went, the more open and prairie-like the landscape became. We kept moving across this wide open watery landscape until again being corralled into channels by coastal mangroves.

Then we ran out of daylight and it got real dark ..

Kaya Kay Skellitonova was a pioneer Everglades gator hunter of old. She was the best at bringing in the big ones, right from her kayak! As the story goes, she once spotted a “Great White Alligator” that thrashed her boat and nearly capsized her. As the seasons went on, she grew more and more determined to seek out and hunt down this great beast! Eventually she was completely consumed by her quest and was never heard from again.

So the legend was born and her last words were said to be:

“Thus, I give up my euro blade paddle!”

Murder mystery in the Magic City.

This is the story* of a body found stuffed into a trash bag, which snagged up on some barnacles on a Stiltsville home. A kayaker made the gruesome discovery and pulled the trash bag out of the water during a Biscayne Bay cleanup. Through dental records,  the remains found inside were identified to be those of local resident Kaya Kay Skellitonova.

Turn up the Night at Stiltsville!
ART of the Bay – Visions of Stiltsville and Biscayne Bay landscapes.

“Stiltsville” is a village of sorts situated about a mile south of Cape Florida in Biscayne Bay, Florida. It’s an iconic Miami landmark,  but somewhat hard to get to since it’s surrounded by water. These homes were built in the shallows on stilts starting in the 1930’s and the number of structures peaked at 27 during the freewheeling Stiltsville heyday. After many decades and a few hurricanes, there are currently only six remaining wooden structures and all are now part of Biscayne National Park.

Enjoy this special day / night Stiltsville experience!

Cabin Fever – when the walls have eyes!

A few years ago I spent a summer guiding in the Upper Penninsula (UP) of northern Michigan. My rustic accommodations centered around an old bunk style camping cabin that had been converted to a stand alone mini apartment.

Perfect for the single paddler and I also enjoyed waterfront living for the first time in my life. 🙂

The walls of my cabin were lined with planks of cedar,

and the eyes literally popped out of the wood work.

It was really tough to find somebody willing and also able to paddle this kind of boat in South Florida. Eventually I decided to do a quick solo test paddle on the intracoastal waterway and Whiskey Creek in Dania Beach using a 50lb counterweight in the front cockpit to simulate a second paddler. This kinda worked OK, but I still couldn’t get the entire waterline submerged.

So I decided to call up my paddling partner Kaya Kay Skellitonova

and she met up with me to finish my test paddle!

ART of Darkness – the Darkest hour at Stiltsville upon Biscayne Bay!

This is the story* of a body found stuffed into a trash bag, which snagged up on some barnacles on a Stiltsville home. A kayaker made the gruesome discovery and pulled the trash bag out of the water during a Biscayne Bay cleanup. Through dental records,  the remains found inside were identified to be those of local resident Kaya Kay Skellitonova.

Records show that her murder was never solved!

The Daily Dose – A quick trip to North Nest Key with a Cuban cigar.

My sister went to Havana

and all I got was a Cuban cigar,

so I smoked it in the Everglades!

.

North Nest Key is a quick getaway on the bay side of the upper Keys.
From Havana con mucho cariño – a quick trip to North Nest Key!

.

Paddling out to the Nest Keys is straightforward and about nine miles when starting from FBO. You can paddle up through either “The Boggies” or Dusenbury Creek. Actually it’s common to make a loop and use both. There are a couple of things to keep in mind however. One is that on a good easterly or southeasterly wind, both Blackwater Sound and Florida Bay can carry a good fetch and bring 3 – 4′ up to 6 foot waves! Be sure to have a good sprayskirt as those quartering seas will break on deck frequently.

Nest Key is a part of Everglades National Park but in reality is just the opposite of remote due to it’s close proximity to Key Largo. Expect a boater’s sandbar party type atmosphere, complete with jetskis, loud stereos, folks drinking and barbecuing.

If this is not your style, avoid Nest Key on the weekends!!

To access the Nest Keys and eastern Florida Bay, one of the best spots to launch from is at Key Largo’s  Florida Bay Outfitters (FBO). Their location makes it a natural choice for paddling Blackwater Sound, Barnes Sound, Buttonwood Sound. But just like anywhere in the Keys, parking space is very limited so you should always call ahead to make arrangements with them!

The Daily Dose – That one Halloween on the Taylor Slough.

Poling, pushing, paddling is all good

Halloween on the Taylor Slough.

.

Paddling down the Taylor Slough and on the Craighead Pond Canoe Trail, exiting at the Nine Mile Pond Canoe Trail inside Everglades National Park. The upper part of Taylor Slough is a beautiful area, paddling among Cypress trees and mixed vegetation. The further south we go, the more open and prairie-like the landscape becomes. Grass paddling is one local Everglades specialty, and usually entails taking advantage of any existing airboat or other trails. Free ranging is possible, but it’s best to save the energy on longer trips such as this one by mostly sticking with the well established NPS airboat trail.

After we paddled off into the sunset, it got dark, real dark!

Kaya Kay Skellitonova was a pioneer Everglades gator hunter of old. She was the best at bringing in the big ones, right from her kayak! As the story goes, she once spotted a “Great White Alligator” that thrashed her boat and nearly capsized her. As the seasons went on, she grew more and more determined to seek out and hunt down this great beast! Eventually she was completely consumed by her quest and was never heard from again.

So the legend was born and her last words were said to be:

“Thus, I give up my euro paddle!”

Cabin Fever – feat. Four Walls & the Eyes!

The Coronavirus global pandemic of 2020 has forced many people to isolate themselves to prevent transmission on the novel Covid-19 virus. Necessary, drastic steps as not seen in living memory! Many are stuck indoors in apartments and homes looking at the four walls around them.

Some years ago I experienced something similar living in a tiny cedar cabin while guiding in northern Michigan. The sparsely populated small town of Cedarville was quite a change of pace from urban S Florida!

The walls of my cabin were lined with planks of cedar, and eyes literally popped out of the wood work.

The eyes of the forest were looking back at me!
