Notably absent however was our dear friend Whitney Turner, RIP. Whitney was a key figure in South Florida paddling as the organizer of the South Florida Kayaking Meetup group for many years. He was also instrumental in organizing and hosting our kayak runs of the Winterfest Boat Parades, and as such a new paddling tradition has been borne in his honor.

The 2022 Gerry Blackstone New Year’s Day Memorial Paddle around Ft Lauderdale.

.

This is an 18 mile paddling loop around Ft Lauderdale which connects the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), the New River in Ft Lauderdale and the Dania Cut-Off Canal. The route was popularized by the late Gerry Blackstone, who was an active New York City based paddler with the the Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club. He loved to spend his winters paddling around South Florida and pioneered this paddle. After he passed away in 2018, this annual event has been named in his honor.

This is a great way to see what’s new in town,

and an excellent overview of Ft Lauderdale from the water!

Kayaking a Parade of Lights (Seminole Winterfest Boat Parade)!

The Winterfest Holiday Boat Parade has become of the top 20 world-wide parades to see with over ONE MILLION cheering spectators lining the 12 mile route in boats and on shore.

The year 2021 marked the

50th annual Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Holiday Boat Parade

.

My own Holiday Parade paddling goes back to 1997 with the crew from the “Waterways Kayak” shop, which was then and still remains to this day the biggest kayak pro shop that South Florida has ever seen! Since moving back to South Florida in 2006, I have paddled the main Winterfest Parade every year except for 2012 when I was “spectating” and in 2020 when it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ft Lauderdale Winterfest Parade route has not changed since 2007 when it was extended to start in downtown Ft Lauderdale rather than by Port Everglades in years prior to that. In 2008 the Parade organizers started placing all non-motorized watercraft at the head of the Parade, instead of the tail end.

So as paddlers,

we are always leading the Winterfest Boat Parade!

Through the years, the Kayak Jeff shop also organized a run of the Parade. However it was with the South Florida Kayaking Meetup that all the regular subsequent runs took place, organized by the late Whitney Turner and currently by Kayak Ted of the Palm Beach Water Yaks group. Ted has also organized and pioneered additional runs of other South Florida Holiday Parades, namely in Boca Raton and Pompano Beach. I have had the great pleasure of participating in all the events listed below and owe a debt of gratitude to both of the aforementioned gentlemen! It has also given me much joy over the years to document these events, all the while having fun experimenting with with different photographic techniques for you viewing pleasure!

If there’s one (and I mean THE one!) “local” Ft Lauderdale annual tradition it has to be the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade.  It is the largest single event not just in town, but in all of Florida, and one of the largest in the USA, drawing over a million estimated spectators along a 12 mile route!!  This really is the one time that folks get together with Holiday cheer and become a part of a bigger picture which bridges across  all the socioeconomic boundaries that are otherwise pervasive in South Florida life. Now in it’s 50th year, the event usually takes place on the second Saturday in December, and is later televised on local TV station WSVN-7.

In Memoriam – Whitney Turner RIP .. aka ‘Kayak Whitney’, South Florida Kayaking Meetup organizer.

Today reflecting on times spent with a friend who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday April 6, 2021. RIP Whitney Turner, you left us all far too soon! Whitney was the organizer of the South Florida Kayaking Meetup Group during it’s heyday and got many new paddlers into the sport to experience South Florida’s waterways. He was also instrumental in organizing and making possible the many Winterfest Holiday Boat Parades that I and others had the pleasure of participating in.

Presented below are photos of Whitney in semi-random order, which I think he would appreciate. He had a particular sense of humor and a way of discussing various topics in depth while paddling. 2020 New Year’s Loop – The second annual Gerry Blackstone New Year’s Day Memorial Paddle

Paddling into the New Year,

not putting up with any more sh*t !!

.

It may be hard to believe that no fewer than six main sewer breaks occurred in Ft Lauderdale going into the third decade of the 21st century! Spilling over 125 000 000 gallons of the stinky stuff into the local waterways. A direct consequence of neglect, over development and passing the buck. The Miami area is not much better, sadly with ongoing line breaks and releases into Biscayne Bay. In many way South Florida is a microcosm of the United States as a whole in terms of crumbling infrastructure that we all depend on, every single day!!

As such this annual event was re-staged as a 12 mile loop further down south in Hollywood instead.

The second annual Gerry Blackstone New Year’s Day Memorial Paddle was held at West Lake Park in Hollywood, Florida. This paddle, always held on the first of the year is an 18 mile loop through Ft Lauderdale – connecting the ICW, Dania Cutoff Canal and the New River. The route was popularized by the late Gerry Blackstone, who was an active New York City based paddler with the the Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club. He loved to spend his winters paddling in South Florida and pioneered this paddling loop.

I recently received new gear from the world wide

“Church of the Double Bladed Paddle” store!

The new design sticker quickly found a home on the stern of my Kirton K1 trainer “RGB“.

.

Paddling on Whiskey Creek at Mizell-Johnson (John U Lloyd) State Park in Dania Beach.

.

The neck gaiter comes in blue, which is great since that is my favorite color! 🙂

The Church neck gaiter is long and nicely made with a tight weave which prevents wind chill around the neck. It is fully breathable when dry, however you can not actually breathe through it when wet. The tight weave definitely blocks the sun well and it will be best used for neck or scalp coverage. I am told there are at least 20 ways to wear it, so I’ll have to experiment and catch up! It also provides a measure of thermal protection from passing South Florida summer squalls when temperatures can suddenly drop 20 degrees or more. For complete UV protection from the merciless Florida sun, I expect to use mine paired with a face protector mask!

.

The neck gaiter when combined with face mask and hat, provides me with total UV sunblock protection.
It does not however provide any protection from Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant (background)! 😉
The End (of sunburn) – my total UV block solution!
