Northern New Mexico is a sunny kind of place – winter, spring and all year round. Because of the high altitude and all the radiant solar heat during the day it’s quite warm and comfortable. The air is light at this altitude, in the winter it feels sterile, like breathing from a SCUBA tank.

It’s also as silent as can be!

In the spring the dry brown hues of winter give way to vibrant greens and fields of beautiful wildflowers! All the new spring growth releases scents that waft through the air along with the sounds of life scurrying around.

There are excellent spring time white water paddling opportunities, but I wanted a slower touring pace to focus on photography and continue to “get to know these places”.

Previously on Winter paddling adventures in The High Country – Part I :

“Winter Wonderland paddling – kayak photography at Cochiti Lake on the Rio Grande in New Mexico”.

I was determined to make kayaking on the Rio Grande at Cochiti Lake a year round sport with my 14 foot sit on top kayak, the well known classic Necky Dolphin. When you take a look at the bow of the Necky Dolphin kayak, you will notice the blunt bow which was designed that way for surfing.

This feature is also what makes it a good ice breaker kayak!

It’s because it actually rides up on top of the ice and then crushes it underneath it’s own weight. This is exactly the same way that the giant ice breaker ships work too! The machete duct taped to the bow is there just to part the way so the hull can break the ice.

In my case the limit to successful kayak ice breaking

was about 1.5″ inches of ice thickness!

Red Bull Flugtag Miami – Paddling to a downtown kayak, boat & plane party!

The Red Bull Flugtag are a series of summer events held in cities around the world where teams compete to build and “fly” outrageous and often whimsical home made flying machines in front of large, live audiences.

The local edition was held for four years in Biscayne Bay, just off Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, Florida. It brought out upwards of 100 000 people, and the best way to see and enjoy it was from the water on your kayak, canoe or SUP!

I wasn’t planning on going snorkeling, but as a Floridian chose to represent!
Winter Wonderland paddling – kayak photography at Cochiti Lake on the Rio Grande in New Mexico.

Kayaking in the desert? That was my question when I lived in Santa Fe a few years ago. Coming from south Florida, the question might seems an oxymoron. Truth is the high desert environment of New Mexico has many rivers running through it. There are excellent seasonal white water paddling opportunities, yet I wanted a slower pace to focus on photography and to “get to know the place”. At first I really missed the ocean, then after a while the desert really grew on me, and I began to think of it as an ocean of dirt. I decided to bring with me a 14 foot sit on top kayak, the well known classic Necky Dolphin.

Also, I was determined to make this a year round sport!

Professionals at work on the job at Port Everglades.

Port Everglades is one of the busiest sea ports

on the eastern seaboard with teams of

professionals ensuring it’s smooth operation.

.

It’s been a while since I last rode ROSIE – she’s a whole lotta kayak, a good choice for the job!
It’s been even longer since I’ve wielded a 230cm euro paddle – wow!!
A tribute to Rosie and all the plus sized kayaks out there.

.

Port Everglades is not a paddling destination in and of itself. However it offers a peek into the operations of a busy commercial sea port and can be a part of a paddling loop in Dania Beach. The intracoastal waterway separates the Port facilities on the west side from the natural and restored wetlands on the east side. All paddling should be done on the east side and out of the way of powerboat traffic on the instracoastal channel per se. Thankfully there are power boat speed limits on this segment which are enforced year round!

.

Witness a different type of professional kayaker with hardhat .. at Port Everglades.

.

This professional kayaker’s job appears to be to watch and observe the seawall fill operation taking place inside the Port.
Most likely this relates to potential environmental impacts due to the ongoing expansion.

.

DO NOT VENTURE INTO THE PORT INLET UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU’RE DOING!

However sections of the intracoastal waterway south of the inlet can be utilized by paddlers seeking a loop to connect with Whiskey Creek and / or the ocean. In fact Dania is one of the very few places in South Florida where a short portage from the instracoastal to the ocean is possible.

This enables taking advantage of tides and wind for your paddling workouts! 🙂

.

The Port inlet is slated to be dredged to increase depth and also widened in spots.
It would really benefit everyone if the speed limit in this short section were lowered to minimum wake out past the jetty.
Rip current hydraulic – a cruise ship so big that it actually drains the water out of Port Everglades inlet!

Most paddlers don’t think much about their feet. They tend to focus more on their arms, their hips and their paddles. But the foot is an important and integral part of kayaking and any paddling in general. Along with the hips and thighs, the feet anchor a paddler in or on top of the craft. Foot protection and footwear come in many forms and styles. As with distinctive paddling hats, footwear also sets paddlers apart!

The feet will let you know when there is a problem or a mismatch with foot pegs or foot pads. Whether fixed, adjustable or sliding, a properly customized fit ensures maximum control and comfort while on the water. In a sit on top you’ll always be looking at your feet. In a traditional kayak, you might not see them but you’ll be feeling and using them – or should be! Sea Kayaks and traditional sit inside kayaks usually have adjustable foot bars or foot pegs. Most sit on top style kayaks have several fixed molded in foot braces. In either case you want to adjust your foot position so that your feet are pushing your butt back into the seat. This will help to keep your lower back straight and in a slightly forward leaning position.

I often see paddlers sit in their boat and immediately lean back as if at home in a recliner. You never want to be leaning back into the backrest unless you’re taking a break! Otherwise you’ll be in the wrong position for actual paddling and harmfully compressing your spine! You may need to readjust or re-position your seat straps to accomplish this. The lean forward position is not only good for paddling, it’s also really good for your lower back.

The feet are the key for proper paddling posture!

We all love to see the sleek, fast and sexy boats. There are times however when a shorter “plus size” sit on top style kayak fits the bill! This is a humorous-musical ode to mine, which I shall call “Rosie”. She’s an Ocean Kayak Peekaboo, and yes, she’s been used and abused, and generally not pampered. With a shallow-vee and nearly flat hull, she’s the ultimate in stability on flat water! She has a large viewing port, and a jump seat in the front meant for a small child. She could carry two light adults in a pinch, but isn’t rated for it. I personally like to ride Rosie Standing UP style for visibility and photography. The downside to all this stability and generous girth is speed. She will cruise with a 230cm kayak paddle at a little over two knots, less when paddling SUP style. She does respond well to leaning and will turn on a dime with practice. Her long tracking keel does it’s job but will tend to catch on roots and grasses when backing up. Rosie can carry a lot of gear for camping, she likes to go snorkeling, she likes taking her time on flat water and she’s an excellent platform for standing.

I don’t always ride Rosie, but when I do we’re in love!  😉
