The Time-release Dose – A celestial alignment of the Sun, the Earth and the Moon created an event that hadn’t happened since 1982!

I decided to paddle out to the

Johnson Key Chickee camping platform to

observe, enjoy and photograph this rare event.

The totality of the eclipse hath descended upon my camp!
Harvest moon, Super moon, Blood moon and High Tides of an Eclipse Tetrad!

The supermoon took it’s place in the sky as

unsuspecting creatures carried on!

The deep darkness brought on by the eclipse and the ever rising water levels reminded me of a powerful poem by the famous Czech author Karel Jaromír Erben. His book ‘Kytice z pověstí národních‘ – A Bouquet of Folk Legends (or just ‘Kytice‘ for short) is a collection of poems based on Slavic mythology and folk themes, long considered to be one of the greatest works of Czech literature.

These are the lines that ran through my head as the tide crept up in the darkness:

(in Czech, of course!)

„Ach nechoď, nechoď na jezero,
zůstaň dnes doma, moje dcero!
Já měla zlý té noci sen:
nechoď, dceruško, k vodě ven.“

The moon’s steady ascent above the horizon is clear evidence of an endless cosmic cycle. From day to night, month to month, epoch to epoch – as our little planet world moves through space and time.

Camping with the Stars means going outside to experience the night as all the wild creatures of the earth do, or as closely as modern western society humans can. It is to step away from, and to go outside the world of people. It means to look up at the vast infinity above full of billions and billions of stars and feel humbled. It means to connect with the power of the infinite and transcend our daily, busy modern lives. It also means to stay up close and connected to the rhythms of the heavens and of the earth!

Remote camping under the full moon is a beautiful

experience not easily forgotten!

Winter birthday triad on Florida Bay with the ‘Banana Boat’!

It was 30 years ago today, that I brought home my

Seda Glider sea kayak.

This Seda Glider sea kayak was my very first ‘real’ kayak. At the time I just wanted a fast boat to scoot around in. I had no concept at all of going camping out in the wilderness and was just learning about paddling in general. It was a good choice as it’s still my main distance camping and cruising boat thirty years later.

The Seda Glider kayak is still in production today!

I like to name my boats, so the Seda Glider quickly became the ‘Banana Boat‘. That simple name was the start of an ongoing customization campaign that actually continues going forward. For instance I will be upgrading her to tiller steering soon!

Back in 1992 there was no internet to speak of and getting information or reviews required a bit of effort. Mostly it was about reading magazines, going to the library (remember those!) and talking to people and trying out boats if/when available locally. One thing I did pick up on at this early stage was to get the kayak, the paddle and a skirt plus a paddle float all together. I sure was glad to have the inflatable paddle float because I needed it the very first time I took the kayak out in the ocean. I successfully deployed it to re-enter my new boat after capsizing off Ft Lauderdale beach. Later I got a pump and life jacket to complete the setup. I had a lot of fun cruising around South Florida and enjoyed the freedom of being the captain of my own boat!

Fortunately that has not changed!

In our ‘modern’ disposable age, owning a product and getting good use from it for thirty years is a rarity. High quality kayaks have never been cheap, but can indeed deliver long lasting value. I’m pretty sure that I can expect this boat to last me a lifetime, or as long as I am able to paddle it!

The Daily Dose – Once upon a time at Cape Romano.

I began to dress like them to fit in, and soon they began to accept me as one of their own.
ART of Cape Romano – The curious inhabitants of Australopithecine Island.

On a remote island in the Ten Thousand Islands area of the Everglades an isolated tribe of curious Australopithecines took up residence in the Cape Romano dome ruins. For years the clan lived in harmony subsisting on a diet of mostly fish, marine life and herbs. Sometimes they would find ready made food containers with half eaten sandwiches and salads, presumably left behind by the “hairless ones” (whom we call tourists).

These were “feast” days to them, and the living was good!

The hominins soon learned that the “hairless ones” would come twice a day, morning and afternoon, almost like the movement of tides. They would watch from their hiding places and later find other objects the “hairless” sometimes left behind. They made good use of all the things left to them like tents, tarps and plastic cups and wood pieces!

The first Australopithecine I ever met, I named him “George” due to his curious nature! There was also at least one female of breeding age and I called her “Lucy”, along with a young juvenile male “Diego”. Where in the world did he come from?

Long live George and the Australopithecine dream!

Staring at the moon can be a hypnotic experience, yet many creatures are nocturnal. They live and die under the moonlight. I once saw a whole flock of Pelicans gliding in the breezes above me in the moonlight. They flew silently in formations, with only the swoosh of their wings giving them away! The moon’s gravitational pull works ocean tides in an endless cycle. In the Everglades this is particularly apparent, especially in places like the flats of First National Bank in the western part of Florida Bay!

I find great comfort resting under the moonlight

while watching it ride across the night sky.

What’s the RGB on my CRT ?

The three primary colors:

Red, Green and Blue.

Individual RGB sub-pixel phosphors on a traditional CRT TV!

Additive mixing of these three can simulate any color and hue that our eyes can detect,

and is the basis for all display devices such as the one you’re looking at right now.

Similarly, a Bayer filter array is commonly used in capture devices like smart phones

and most digital cameras.

.

When the three primary colors average out to an

even intensity over a given unit of time,

it gives the illusion of white light from a normal viewing distance!

.

For this reason I named my

Kirton K1 trainer fitness kayak – “RGB“

because it is painted all white and

I am a photographer! 🙂

The Daily Dose – Camping with the Stars with a side trip to the Moon.

After watching the moon slowly descend and peacefully set over the Gulf of Mexico, there was an eerie stillness in the pre-dawn glow.

Eerie full moon solo camping next to the “lunar module” looking domes of Cape Romano when they were still on dry land in October 2008. Originally the separate domes were all connected with walkways and made up one unique island home. I woke up in the pre-dawn hours to watch the moon setting over the Gulf of Mexico.

Remote camping under the full moon is a beautiful experience not easily forgotten!

The Daily Dose – Starshine and light pollution from the South Florida Megalopolis.

Scenes from

Outside the world of people.

Low clouds over Florida Bay delineate the stars and light pollution emanating from the Miami metropolitan area.

Eerie beauty reflecting the darkness of Everglades National Park.
ART of Darkness – Camping with the Stars! Part II

This is the light pollution arising from the lighting needs of millions people living in urban South Florida. The core density of these lights is about 75 to 100 miles away in this photograph. It’s a kind of “permanent dawn” on the horizon that also serves as a navigational aid out in Everglades National Park. Most of the time this is a kind of unavoidable annoyance that destroys the full darkness and wipes out stars.

Sometimes though the glow can be beautiful,

and then becomes it’s own subject! 😮

The Galilean moons were the first ever objects found to orbit another world by Galileo Galilei in the spring of 1610!

They were named after the lovers of the Greek God Zeus, by German astronomer Simon Marius  at the suggestion of Johannes Kepler. Marius independently sighted these worlds in the same time frame as Galileo.

Improvements in telescope optics and design made by Galileo enabled a magnification factor of 20x which incidentally is the same as my photography setup with a 1000mm reflex lens (20 x 50mm standard view)!
