Full moon photography fever with some sunspots!
.
The particular full moon in this story was a once or twice in a lifetime experience. The moon appeared 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual as it made it’s closest approach to the Earth in many decades. Moreover, the next impressive supermoon like this one won’t occur until 2034!
On November 13th and 14th there was an exceptional full moon which lit up the night, popularly called the Supermoon of 2016.
This was the closest approach to the
Earth that the moon has made since 1948!
The full Moon was only 221,524 miles (356,509 km) away and appeared noticeably larger and brighter. Technically this event is called a perigee-syzygy. There were also some unusually high tides, up to more than a foot extra in some places in South Florida! For paddlers and campers, this meant that the super high tides likely temporarily flooded some of the island and ground sites in Everglades National Park.
.
.
To fully appreciate a full moon camping experience, it is worthwhile to paddle out to one of the remote backcountry campsites in the Ten Thousand Islands or Florida Bay. This story starts by paddling out to Little Rabbit Key which is centrally located in Florida Bay.

While the Sun was riding high, I decided to see if there was any interesting sunspot activity going on up there that might further add to this celestial event.
.

My weapon of choice to capture the Sun and Moon is this SMC Pentax 1000/11 reflex lens.
.

The special solar filter installed over my super telephoto lens is made of a coated mylar, also called a Baader safety film.
.

The Sun on November 13th, 2016 showed only a little bit of sunspot activity despite the turmoil of the times!
.
Caution:
Never look directly into the sun through your DSLR camera,
lens or telescope without a special solar filter or
Baader safety film installed for safe observation!
.

The Earth is about the same size as one of those little dots!
.

Two more sunspots – the diagonal lines are foliage that was in the way.
Again, our little planet Earth is about the same size as one spot!
.
.
Moving on, it’s time to kick back and enjoy a beautiful sunset followed by a sweet full Moon rising!

The 1000mm Pentax reflex lens really makes photographing the moon worthwhile, especially with an APS-C sensor cam. Getting focus spot on is tricky, but the reflex design really shines in this application! 🙂
