Spanish River Blvd – Boca Raton Inlet loop
for lightweight boats or boards!
.
.
Here’s a simple workout and fitness paddling loop starting and ending at Spanish River Blvd in Boca Raton. It’s one of the few places where a short portage from beach to intracoastal is easy to do with a lightweight paddling kit. This feature is quite rare in South Florida – so rare in fact that you’d have to go down to Mizell-Johnson (John U Lloyd) State Park in Dania Beach for the next spot to be able to portage from the ocean to the intracostal! This is due to geography, the intense development, private property, seawalls and beach landing restrictions. The route is obviously reversible to take advantage of the tides.
.

There’s plenty of street parking on Spanish River Blvd between A1A and the intracoastal bridge. This is the western-most spot.
This is much cheaper than entering one of the (very nice) Boca parks – and much more convenient for paddling.
.

Everybody has to pay and pay, Boca Raton never gives it away! 😉
2 hours parking is more than enough to paddle the loop with two swim breaks and the portage!
.

I found myself in Boca Raton with time to spare for a paddle.
My 25lb k1 trainer “RGB” (Kirton Tercel) is an ideal boat for this loop and portage!
.
.

The path has been recently cleared and is much nicer than in years past when I did this portage carrying my surfski through the brush!
.

Under the Spanish River Blvd bridge looks nice with no funny characters around. There is some trash but looks like they are trying to keep it clean.
.

An almost ideal sandy beach to launch from under the bridge.
If there is washed up seaweed though it can get a lil “stale”. 😉

.

Heading south along the east side mangroves line the intracostal as these are parks.
Don’t look too close though, there might be people livin’ in them thar woods!
.

Further south, McMansions, actual mansions and a few “normal” homes line the instracoastal with seawalls.
.
.

On the west bank of the intracoastal there is another put in option at the boat ramp at Silver Palm Park off Palmetto Park Rd. I was glad to not have to deal with this traffic today!
.

Silver Palm Park however is a great place to launch for paddling the annual Boca Raton Holiday Boat Parade!

Looking straight out the Boca Raton Inlet – it’s very narrow and there is always a small break on the north side.

This is a great place to cool off with a short swim break.
A large Tarpon swam within 30ft of me in the shallow waters.

Spanish River Park and beach in Boca Raton, Florida.
Unlike the very strict Ft Lauderdale beaches, dogs and boats are no problem at all! 🙂

The short portage along Spanish River Blvd in Boca Raton. You can launch off the beach or into the instracostal under the brige to suit the tides!
.
The path under the Spanish River Blvd bridge has been cleared out, whereas previously this was overgrown and kinda sketchy as a portage. It really helps to do this in a lightweight surfski, k1 kayak or board that is easy to carry. This loop is easily done in about an hour and a half. Also the lifeguards and people in general are friendly which promotes a relaxed and satisfying workout!
So if you find yourself in Boca Raton and want to do a quick paddle,
give it a go!
