That US NAVY submarine is back again!

US Navy Virginia class submarine off the coast of Ft Lauderdale, Florida.
About that US NAVY submarine off Dania Beach.

.

I’ve been seeing this sub on and off for years, right offshore from Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park in Dania Beach.

It’s always in the same area, just south of Port Everglades inlet, about a couple miles offshore. Seems to run a short north – south course paralleling the coast.

Since the 1990s, US NAVY subs have been conducting undersea mapping, listening and other exercises right in this area. The submarines use special detection devices to determine the acoustical and electromagnetic signatures of nearby ships. It’s a part of the South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility, i.e. the Naval Surface Warfare Center located inside Port Everglades. It uses special detection devices to determine the acoustical and electromagnetic signatures of nearby ships. It’s a part of the South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility, i.e. the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The ship itself is a large nuclear powered Virginia-class attack submarine, and here’s a video of a similar one heading out of Port Everglades back in 2015!

The MJ Park, formerly known as John U. Lloyd Beach State Park is the last remaining undeveloped beach and quite possibly the nicest natural place in all of Broward County!

A new boat came into the shop; I fell in love with her and gave her a home!

Getting back to performance Sea Kayaking

with the Stellar SILV.

.

The lingering smell of recently cured resin can only mean one thing – a new boat.

But this is no ordinary scent, this one is epoxy new kayak smell !

It’s not unlike the “new car smell” – something that feels a bit special that only comes around every so often and eventually fades away. Depending on the type of construction and resins used or adhesives applied, that scent can range from mild to strong to overpowering. Without mentioning any names, the truth is that some kayaks really smell bad inside!

The subject here is a brand new Stellar sea kayak, and I’m happy to say that it falls into the “mild” scent category.

This is because it is an epoxy resin layup, rather than the more commonly used polyester resin. As such the smell is strangely somewhat pleasant, so yeah, kinda like that new car smell.

Into the wild blue yonder, en route for the maiden voyage of my Stellar SILV sea kayak.

.

My new sea kayak is a Stellar Intrepid LV (SILV) model in the standard Advantage layup. This one is the more petite and slightly scaled down version of Stellar’s Intrepid kayak. The Advantage construction features a foam core composite sandwich with epoxy infused fiberglass which results in a very stiff but light kayak. It is used on both the hull and the deck, which are joined in a seam that is glassed over inside and out. I actually weighed the kayak and true to spec, it comes in at 43 lbs. This is a pretty good number, making it easy to pickup, load and carry. I tend to carry boats on my head, so the light weight and the seat padding makes this easy and comfortable.

The light weight is something I’ve been looking for in a sea kayak!

flex maslan kayakfari stellar silv sea kayak intrepid lv british candy-o low volume performance advantage greenland.

This kayak is really interesting to me because of the low volume and thus more petite dimensions. At 6’2″ and 170lbs, I am at the upper range for this design and I see this as a good thing. It means that I can easily ‘overpower’ this boat, particularly when using a wing paddle. This is my second Stellar boat, the first being my SES G2 surfski aka the GREY GHOST. I’m also at the upper end on the design envelope for the SES, and benefit from it for the same reasons.

I got this kayak to enjoy the simple beauty of ‘the joy of paddling’, and the light weight is a big part of that. Being so light and petite, this boat can respond very quickly to any blade and hip movement.

.

flex maslan kayakfari stellar silv sea kayak intrepid lv british candy-o low volume performance advantage greenland

My Stellar SILV at rest in Port Everglades, Ft Lauderdale – her home port. La dolce vita!

.

The acquisition of my first Stellar – the SES surfski set me off on an exploration of wing paddles for years to come. So I’ve been paddling with various wings about 90% of the time for over 5 years now. Before that however, I paddled extensively with my Greenland sticks. The SILV pairs well with either and I look forward to some quality time using both. One thing I am noticing is that my ‘mid’ wood GP stick feels kinda “blunt” with this boat. It does not have the ‘precise’ kind of feel that carbon wing paddles present at the catch and release. So I am trying out a carbon Greenland Paddle with a very thin tip that may be a better match.

With my ‘Gamma’ type wing, paddling the SILV in a surfski-style manner feels quite fast and very stable. The foot pegs allow for a solid push for good leg drive and there is just enough room for my knees at the peak of the coaming. Of course my knees can slip under the thigh braces in a split second for more extreme edging. I’m also finding that a raised foam seat pad helps slightly with posture and allows me to lay back easier, something I will explore later with the carbon GP.

So while the wing can bring the SILV up to speed,

it’s the Greenland stick that will make her dance!

Perhaps the final phase of beach re-nourishment taking place at the north end of Dania Beach.
The shifting sands of time – Beach erosion and re-nourishments in Dania Beach.

.

The SILV has a generous amount of rocker in the stern and with the wing paddle the skeg needs to come into play almost all the time to some extent. Some purists might not like this, though it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The design allows this boat to feel nice and loose when retracted, yet track solid in any conditions when deployed. After all, some native skin boats also needed skegs (not to mention ballast stones too). In contrast to Stellar’s other designs many of which are swede form, this one is very nearly symmetric – if ever so slightly fish form. It translates into balanced handling in the chop and any conditions, and this kayak doesn’t care whether it’s going forward or backwards. In fact paddling backwards, the SILV tracks nearly perfectly since there is less rocker in the bow.

.

flex maslan kayakfari stellar silv sea kayak intrepid lv british candy-o low volume performance advantage greenland

Stellar SILV sea kayak (Intrepid LV) symmetry!

.

I’m not sure why, but Stellar claims that the SILV has hard chines, although I see no evidence of this. The chines are well defined, yes – but there is certainly no hard edge to them. I have actual hard chine boats and the SILV is not one of them. Regardless of the verbiage, this kayak handles great and I find it easy to direct it with my hips.

.

Stellar Kayaks is an interesting 21st century company.
In their relatively short history, they’ve already brought several gems to the market.

.

Stellar Kayaks is a company that is really coming into it’s own in the 2020s. Barely fifteen years on the market, they are one of a few kayak companies not necessarily rooted in the last century. It’s evident at first glance that Stellar kayaks and surfskis are thoroughly modern from the design to construction and the fit and finish. These are high end boats, built to high standards and are generally well known for that.

The more old school kayak designs were often started by kayakers making their own boats out of necessity when the sport of Sea Kayaking was very young. Some later became the famous “guru” kayak personalities we know and love to this day, having brought us timeless classic designs. Their designs were in turn based on ancient Inuit kayaks housed in European museums. In contrast, the Stellar approach seems more analytical in nature as they start off with the cleanest and most efficient hull designs, no doubt extensively modeled in Naval computer software. This we know for sure, especially for their surfskis – but as for the inner workings at Stellar, not much is really known. I would imagine that they must receive scores of input from top level paddlers on the deck layout and ergonomics and style. The Stellar boats are generally well thought out, comfortable and fast! Whatever their design formula is, it is definitely working.

Down here in Southeast Florida, the place to get a Stellar boat is at Liquid Surf and Sail in Ft Lauderdale. In fact it’s the place to get all your kayak and watersports gear in general because nobody else has the kind of breadth and scope available locally!

Full disclosure:

I do work there, so I might be a little bit opinionated on this. But check around and you’ll see!

.

flex maslan kayakfari stellar silv sea kayak intrepid lv british candy-o low volume performance advantage greenland

Sticks, Wings and beautiful boats! 🙂

.

I did take advantage of employee pricing extended to me from Stellar. However, I purchased this kayak with my own money and have not received any compensation to write about it. Composite kayaks like this one have never been inexpensive, but they are still (barely) affordable and can represent good value. I’m not a serial boater who acquires and resells kayaks just to try them out. I tend to buy for the long term. For example my Seda Glider aka ‘Banana Boat’ is going strong since 1992 and continues to be my choice for long distance trekking and camping in the Everglades. I only get a boat if I know I’m gonna love paddling it or if it fulfills a certain function very well.

So the light weight and delightful paddling manners of this new kayak signal a fun return to Sea Kayaking for me! 🙂

.

flex maslan kayakfari stellar silv sea kayak intrepid lv british candy-o low volume performance advantage greenland

The Stellar Intrepid LV (SILV) sea kayak is really fun to paddle.
The lightweight and low volume design with generous stern rocker makes for a very responsive boat!

From SILV to .. CANDY-O !

I love to name boats. So my Stellar SILV shall be known as
‘CANDY-O‘

Next installment we’ll take a more detailed look at the SILV

and some simple and useful customizations.

South Florida experienced the wrath of hurricane Irma on September 9 to 11, 2017. The huge storm made a last minute shift to the west which meant that the east coast was spared it’s full fury. It was a very, very close call for us.

Not surprisingly, there weren’t many boaters out, just mostly tugs and freighters doing their jobs.

White Pelicans are very social creatures and like to stay together whether in the air or on the ground.
Welcoming the fall arrival of White Pelicans in Florida Bay!

.

White Pelicans love to fly close and low to the water like an undulating roller coaster over Florida Bay!

They are among the largest of all birds, with a wingspan upwards of 9 feet and also some of the heaviest. Each year they like to over-winter in the southern states but actually breed during the summer up north.

Halloween on the Taylor Slough.

.

Grass paddling is a local Everglades specialty!

While free ranging is always possible, it’s usually best to save the energy by mostly sticking to (relatively) well established canoe and NPS airboat trails as much as possible. Poling, pushing, and paddling – it’s all good on the slough. This Halloween trip followed down the Taylor Slough and then the Craighead Pond Canoe Trail, eventually exiting at the Nine Mile Pond Canoe Trail. The upper part of Taylor Slough is a beautiful area, paddling amongst Cypress trees with mixed vegetation. Then the further south we went, the more open and prairie-like the landscape became. We kept moving across this wide open watery landscape until again being corralled into channels by coastal mangroves.

Then we ran out of daylight and it got real dark ..

“The Great White Alligator”
ART of Halloween kayaking – a Darkness in the Everglades!

.

Kaya Kay Skellitonova was a pioneer Everglades gator hunter of old. She was the best at bringing in the big ones, right from her kayak! As the story goes, she once spotted a “Great White Alligator” that thrashed her boat and nearly capsized her. As the seasons went on, she grew more and more determined to seek out and hunt down this great beast! Eventually she was completely consumed by her quest and was never heard from again.

So the legend was born and her last words were said to be:

“Thus, I give up my euro blade paddle!”

The last functioning beacon atop Alligator Reef Lighthouse.
Kayaking to Alligator Light Reef (lighthouse) .. of Fishes, Wreckers, Pirates and Keys History!

.

Alligator Reef Lighthouse

The shallow reef and light were named after the USS Alligator which shipwrecked there in November of 1822, although it would be another fifty years until the light was built in 1873! It is a beautiful and sturdy Victorian era tower, standing 136 feet tall, and has survived several major hurricanes and was an operational lighthouse/beacon until the summer of 2014!

For this trip I chose the “Mojito”, an RTM Disco sit on top kayak. This is probably the nicest handling inexpensive plastic kayak for paddlers under 175 lbs. Granted, it’s a very wet ride, but this is actually a plus in the tropical heat. With the addition of thigh straps, it responds much like a proper sea kayak and is great to learn and practice kayaking and rescue skills. It’s also easy to roll and an excellent surf/play boat for South Florida waters!

I hope you enjoy the fine views from the top!

Chief Chekika’s Island hideout in the Everglades.

A nearly forgotten place,

yet an important piece of Florida history!

.

(tap or click pic to read)

Flex Maslan kayakfari photographer Chekika island kayak canoe everglades tree hammock satellite Harney 1840 Indian Key

Chekika Island and Indian Key are forever linked by the infamous raid of 1840. Chekika and his men had to sail and paddle about 90 miles each way which took several days.

.

The infamous Indian Key raid and massacre that occurred

on this day in 1840 fits into the much broader

context of the Second Seminole War.

.

In the days leading up to this, Chekika’s band of warriors would have been traversing the Shark River Slough aka, the “River of Grass”. Once out of the slough, they would have navigated the maze of coastal mangroves and exited into Florida Bay probably in the vicinity of today’s Flamingo. The final stretch of about 30 miles across Florida Bay enabled them to reach the keys near Indian Key where they lay in wait to launch their surprise attack. There is plenty of information on the Indian Key attack itself, but not much on Chekika’s home base which was at the time hidden deep in the unknown Everglades.

Today thousands of daily motorists unknowingly drive right past it on their way to or from the west coast on the Tamiami Trail!

There is limited historical information about Chief Chekika, but he was said to be a man of great stature at over 6ft tall and 200lbs plus. He was a leader in his people’s struggle against the US Government’s genocidal policies, generally referred to as the Second Seminole War. This war was a direct result of a very dark chapter in American History called the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the ensuing Trail of Tears. It’s because of this that dislocated native peoples were driven deeper down into Florida and eventually the Everglades. The systematic destruction of native culture, removal and outright genocide was official government policy. Sadly this grave injustice has yet to addressed by our government nearly 200 years later!

Mother, should I trust the Government?

The earliest reference to Chekika is from July 23, 1839 when he led a successful raid on the Caloosahatchee Trading Post in which Lt col. Harney barely escaped with his life. It would appear that Harney then held a personal grudge against Chekika, and the events that unfolded next played right into this. Chekika’s plan was to raid the large stockpiles of salvage and other supplies stored in warehouses on Indian Key. These were owned and maintained by Captain Jacob Housman, who owned most the of island. On August 7, 1840 Chekika and his band of 60-130 warriors attacked and raided the Key in what is sometimes called the Indian Key Massacre. Upwards of 18 people were killed by the time mayhem was over including Dr. Perrine and the whole town was burned. Chekika’s band left Indian Key with 28 canoes and six of Houseman’s boats filled with all the loot. They sailed and paddled the 90 odd miles back to their base at Chekika Island hidden inside the endless Everglades.

Today is National Lighthouse Day.

In South Florida we have several lighthouses,

celebrate by visiting one!

Some are on land and accessible to everyone, others are out at sea over the Florida Keys reef chain.

They are just a small subset of all the lighthouses in Florida!

These lighthouses were lifesaving beacons in their day and

today remain beacons of time in South Florida history!

Please note:

I am describing open water trips miles offshore with NO possibility of getting out anywhere.

Plan accordingly and paddle within your limitations and the weather conditions!!

Offshore means you are subject to wind, waves, currents AND the South Florida general boating public!

Be absolutely sure you know what you are getting into before considering doing this kind of a trip!

Safety first means planning and research first!

Always have plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated!

Snake Creek Canal C-9 and the original Oleta River.

.

Beware!

The original historical Oleta River drained the unspoiled Everglades into the Atlantic Ocean via the (today’s) Baker’s Haulover cut. As such it was situated between the Miami River to the south and the New River to the north in today’s Ft Lauderdale. Thus it was a natural place for people to want to congregate and live there. There is evidence of human habitation since at least 500BC by the Tequesta native peoples. The current C-9 canal was originally a tributary to the Oleta River, called Little Snake Creek by 1841. By the late 19th century, the area was being homesteaded with fruit and vegetable farms. In 1922, Big Snake Creek was renamed the Oleta River by developers. Today it is part of the Oleta River State Park and still follows the historic contour of the original river. Everything else has been dredged into canals and rock quarry “borrow pits” which we might call “lakes” today.

Mango and I at the Sand Key Lighthouse which was first lit on July 20, 1853.
Sand Key Lighthouse – kayaking to the “southern star” of the offshore Keys reef lights!

.

This is the only offshore Keys reef lighthouse that

I was able to stand under on dry ground.

Nothing quenches thirst quite like a home grown mango!

The Sand Key lighthouse was the second of the six Florida Keys offshore reef lights to be constructed during the second half of the 19th century. It was also the second lighthouse erected on Sand Key, replacing a previous brick structure which was completely swept away during a fierce hurricane in 1846. On July 20, 1853 the light was lit for the first time and projected with a first-order Fresnel lens manufactured by Henry-Lepaute of Paris, France. This was the first application of such a lens on a Florida lighthouse and it remained in place in the lantern room until 1967!

The history of the two Sand Key lighthouses

( PDF reprinted from The Keeper’s Log — Summer 2003 www.uslhs.org )

.

This skeletal iron tower once stood on a sizable island of actual dry sandy ground. However later hurricanes would wash away much of the sand above water as early as 1856. This resilient lighthouse still stands, but currently Sand Key is just a small sporadically roving sandy shoal which appears and disappears with the years and seasons.

A watermelon picnic under the Sand Key Lighthouse on July 16, 1899.
Sand Key Lighthouse – kayaking to the “southern star” of the offshore Keys reef lights!

.

By coincidence, my mango fiesta privada at Sand Key

was on the same date, thus continuing the picnic.

The Sand Key lighthouse was the second of the six Florida Keys offshore reef lights to be constructed during the second half of the 19th century. It was also the second lighthouse erected on Sand Key, replacing a previous brick structure which was completely swept away during a fierce hurricane in 1846.

From time to time, sand can build back up around the lighthouse shoal large enough to support additional structures and buildings. While the sand lasted in would attract people to visit and also large number of animals, particularly birds. It’s been written that thousands of terns once congregated on the Sand Key shoal to nest. Due to the close proximity to Key West and the many visitors, the Tern eggs were gathered en masse for food. Even the lighthouse keepers would get in on it and gather bucket loads full to give away. By the turn of the 20th century, the takings were so great that out of over ten thousand birds nesting, only a few hundred were actually left to hatch. It was also during this time that many birds were being slaughtered in huge numbers in an orgy of greed, sometimes wiping out entire rookeries in an afternoon. This decimated water bird populations on the islands, particularly in Florida Bay and the Everglades.

This is the only offshore Keys reef lighthouse where

I was able to stand under it on (mostly) dry ground.

Outrage over wholesale slaughter of shorebirds by the millions prompted the earliest conservation efforts with the passage of laws to curtail the millinery trade. In fact, in 1905, Guy Bradley was hired to serve as the first Audubon game warden. In 1905 he was shot and killed by bird poachers in Florida Bay, just outside of Flamingo. The same year the National Audubon Society was founded. Today the Tropical Audubon Society continues locally to advocate for conservation, education and preservation of our wetlands and wildlife. On Sand Key itself, the keepers would eventually become wardens themselves and secure the Tern nests on the island. However hurricanes have always blown away everything else save for the lighthouse itself!

.

Despite being smack in the middle of Hurricane Irma’s path in 2017, this resilient lighthouse looks to be in very good condition for it’s years!

For this offshore adventure I paddled my favorite SOT kayak, the RTM Disco, aka ‘MOJITO’. The Disco is the kind of kayak that is easy to start with, but one that encourages and even asks to be paddled aggressively. Paired with a wing paddle she moves quickly at 4 knots or better, only limited by the short waterline and endurance. The addition of a footplate greatly increases ergonomics and also allows me to paddle the MOJITO like a surfski utilizing leg drive! 🙂

I anchored the MOJITO just north of American Shoal light in about six feet of water. Unlike all the other offshore reef lighthouses, American Shoal is the only one that does not have it’s own special underwater preserve. This because the shoal it sits on is pretty much a dead reef zone unfortunately!

Camping with the Stars means going outside to experience the night as all the wild creatures of the earth do, or as closely as modern western society humans can. It is to step away from, and to go outside the world of people. It means to look up at the vast infinity above full of billions and billions of stars and feel humbled. It means to connect with the power of the infinite and transcend our daily, busy modern lives. It also means to stay up close and connected to the rhythms of the heavens and of the earth!

Enjoy the Universe!

Seeking Higher ground and

Faith in Numbers in the Lower Keys!

“Higher ground.”
Exploring a Higher Ground in the Lower Keys! Part I.

.

Part I : Camping on a sandbar shoal and paddling the Barracuda, Marvin  and the Snipe Keys.

What’s real nice about a sandbar is that since it is surrounded by water and there’s no vegetation, there are absolutely no bugs to deal with. On the flip side, it gets hot under the summer sun, so it helps to bring your own shade in the form of an umbrella or a Sombrero.

If you decide to work on your tan, don’t forget to flip over.

You wouldn’t want to go home half baked!

As luck would have it, this summer trip occurred near the full moon and the tidal ranges were at the extremes for the Keys! The little sandbar shoal was just about underwater during the daytime high tide, and conversely the daytime low left the seabed exposed almost as far as the eye could see. The “top” of this shoal was smaller than a typical living room. The shape of the high ground “living room” was an interesting contoured triangle type shape that is often found repeated in nature.

Summertime kayaking and exploration of the

lower Keys backcountry.

Everglades hot summer camping and cruising – the Central & Western Florida Bay loop!

.

Florida Bay is a special kind of place to get away

from it all but come prepared to keep the party polite.

.

Summer in South Florida is the wet and rainy season and tends to be very hot! For paddlers the extreme heat and humidity can be risk factors for those unprepared. On any summer trip, it is essential to have up to twice the amount of drinking water that you think you need! This means ideally you should have up to 2 gallons (8 liters) of water per day. Most of us living in South Florida are habituated to the comfort of air conditioning, and it’s very easy to underestimate how much water you can sweat out!

Also there is the ever present possibility of afternoon squalls and violent thunderstorms. This is really the main wildcard to deal with, although even in the summer the storms or lack there-of tend to come in batches. With keen observation, it is possible to find a window for camping and avoid storms. For one or two night trips, the odds can be good. However if you stay out long enough, the odds will eventually catch up, as we shall see!

You can read more about dealing with the summer heat in:

Somewhere between

heaven and hell

lies

real Everglades paddling freedom!

.

The Sweetwater chickee camping platform was next on our list. It lies tucked away inside a little ‘finger cove’ of Sweetwater Bay. It is also pretty close to the Everglades interior (i.e. the slough) so the tidal influence was minimal here. I tasted the water and it was pretty sweet, probably good enough to filter. However this may not always be the case at other times of the year!

The Sweetwater chickee is aptly named for the water was indeed sweeter!
Heaven or Hell: Summer paddling and camping in the Ten Thousand Islands

.

Paddling in the summer heat really feels like being in a steam bath. I tried dunking myself in the water to cool off, but it was not very effective since the water felt like a hot tub. Still, the evaporation of the water did help a tiny bit. I was glad that I used an old somewhat leaky nylon spray skirt rather than my neoprene nice fitting one. The porousness did keep me cooler!

Some people bring sports drinks for hydration. I rely mostly on plain water supplemented with rations of young cocoanut water to replenish the sweated out salts. If you go paddling in the summer, it bears repeating:

Bring twice the amount of drinking water you think you’ll need!

The totality of the eclipse hath descended upon my camp!
Harvest moon, Super moon, Blood moon and High Tides of an Eclipse Tetrad!

.

The supermoon took it’s place in the sky as

unsuspecting creatures carried on!

The deep darkness brought on by the eclipse and the ever rising water levels reminded me of a powerful poem by the famous Czech author Karel Jaromír Erben. His book ‘Kytice z pověstí národních‘ – A Bouquet of Folk Legends (or just ‘Kytice‘ for short) is a collection of poems based on Slavic mythology and folk themes, long considered to be one of the greatest works of Czech literature.

.

These are the lines that ran through my head as the tide crept up in the darkness:

(in Czech, of course!)

„Ach nechoď, nechoď na jezero,
zůstaň dnes doma, moje dcero!
Já měla zlý té noci sen:
nechoď, dceruško, k vodě ven.“

(* My best English translation *)

“Don’t go, don’t go to the lake,
Stay at home today, my daughter!
I dreamt frightful dreams in the night:
Don’t go, my darling daughter, to the water.”

(* Read the rest of the poem: English translation by Susan Reynolds*)
