Here’s looking at Euclid! 😉
Pahayokee Overlook to Main Street – Probing into the middle of Shark River Slough.

.

“Too deep for walking and too shallow for boating”.

There is a well known airboat trail known as “Main Street” which runs the length of the largest slough inside of Everglades National Park. This path is not open to the general public for airboating, however it does enable paddlers to transit the length of the famed “River of Grass”. The Shark River Slough runs from the Tamiami Trail down to Bottle Creek at the south end, where navigable water leads eventually connect to the Canepatch backcountry campsite. The purpose of this trip was to to try and connect to Main Street from the Pahayokee Overlook, as a shorter alternate route to get to Canepatch!

Do what you must to establish solid footing in your boat ..
Your feet are the key to proper paddling posture!

.

Being mindful of your feet as the foundation for your paddling posture will yield many benefits over time!

Many paddlers don’t seem to think much about their feet unless they happen to step wrong on something. The focus always seems to be more on their arms, their hips and their paddles. But the foot is an important and integral part of kayaking and all paddling in general. Along with the hips and thighs, the feet position a paddler in or on top of their craft and provide an anchor point for optimum paddling motion.

Tune in to the biggest show of all tonight!

Celestial alignments reveal the clockwork our universe at large.

It’s only due to a fortuitous cosmic coincidence that our Sun and the Moon appear about the same size to us on Earth – that’s what makes a total eclipse of the sun possible!

By now thousands of people have probably noticed

the submarine that’s been appearing just offshore

from Ft Lauderdale – Dania Beach.

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle

The US NAVY submarine can sometimes even be seen remotely on a web cam! (composite photo)
Dania Beach Pier and Beach WebCam

.

The sub is usually seen in the same area, which is just south of Port Everglades inlet, and about a couple miles offshore. It seems to run on a short north – south course, paralleling the coast and always with a police escort.

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle

US Navy Virginia class submarine off the coast of Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

.

The sub itself is a large nuclear powered

Virginia-class fast-attack submarine.

It was designed for anti-submarine warfare and intelligence gathering operations, among other things. Each sub costs $2.8 billion and is being built by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Newport News, Virginia.

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle

The submarine seems to run on a north-south course, reversing direction repeatedly.

.

Sometimes the submarine gets really close to shore, maybe only a mile or so. I’ve tried paddling out towards it previously, but then changed my mind after seeing the police escort boat. 😉

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle

When the submarine is operating, there is actually an exclusion zone for boaters!

.

Rip current hydraulic – a cruise ship so big that it actually drains the water out of Port Everglades inlet!

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle

Busy Port Everglades activity also includes freighters, private vessels, charter fishing boats, etc.

.

Please remember that Port Everglades inlet is a busy SHIPPING LANE and a FULL SPEED boating zone!

DON’T venture inside or cross the inlet unless you know EXACTLY what you’re doing and have a good reason for doing so!

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle

A large private yacht enters Port Everglades inlet at high speed, framed by the semi-dilapidated inlet jetty.

.

After some research, I found out that since the 1990s, US NAVY subs have been conducting undersea mapping, listening and other exercises right in this area. The submarines use special detection devices to determine the acoustical and electromagnetic signatures of nearby ships. It’s a part of the South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility, i.e. the Naval Surface Warfare Center located inside Port Everglades.

Of course, with the currently tense political climate and the Russian-Ukraine war going on, it’s hard not to link this submarine to it. This wouldn’t be the first time that enemy submarines have been sighted off Florida’s coast. Nazi Germany WWII U-boats and Soviet subs during the cold war, for instance. The whole idea of spying with a submarine is to remain undetected, and very recently the Russians did just that – at least for some time! 😮

.

Here’s a video of perhaps the same or a similar one heading out of Port Everglades back in 2015!

.

flex maslan kayakfari port everglades submarine kayak ft lauderdale navy dania beach paddle 1990s

I have paddled right up to a couple of US Navy subs back in the 1990s. This was before 9/11 inside Port Everglades.
I mean right next to it because I recall touching the rubber outer cladding!

Why paddle on this canal and these

less loved parts of South Florida?

It’s a chance to experience firsthand the flow of the water in today’s re-plumbed Everglades ecosystem. It’s also kind of neat to paddle into the city from outside and witness the transitions and many changes that have been made within the last one hundred years.

It’s a chance to get a wider perspective of the big picture of the Everglades and of South Florida that many people only read about but may not really comprehend!

Paddling the Miami River Canal – Part I: Engineered Freshwater.

.

On the edge of the Everglades lies a Shangri-la of sorts called Mack’s Fish Camp. It’s like a small oasis just outside the sea of suburban sprawl and development that defines South Florida today. Mack’s has a real old time Florida feel to it and it’s origins go back to a squatter’s camp in the early days of life on the canal. Today it is the last of it’s kind in South Florida! It’s a quiet place, save for some distant noises  from airplanes en route in and out Miami International Airport (MIA). If you want to paddle this part of the Miami River Canal, this is a clean and secure place to launch from.  It is accessible via a dirt road just a couple of miles from Hwy 27 off Krome Avenue (997) in far western Miami-Dade county.

Sombrero Reef Lighthouse – visiting the tallest of the reef lights via kayak!

.

The Sombrero Reef Lighthouse is the tallest of all the Keys offshore reef lighthouses at 142 feet! Sombrero light was first lit in 1858 and stands in about 6 feet of water. Back then parts of the reef were exposed at low tide, and there was a small island there. Early Spanish explorers named it ‘Cayo Sombrero’, hence the reef’s name! It looks a lot like the Alligator Reef Light, only all rusty red instead of the white and black theme.

.

Of course, for a paddling trip to Sombrero Lighthouse,

I had to wear a Sombrero myself.

Out of all the boaters that were there, only one made the obvious

Sombrero-Sombrero

connection! 😮

The 2022 Fort Lauderdale Air Show is happening in the skies this weekend over the beach. This event taken place in late spring since the mid nineties, and has been known under a few different names, initially as the Fort Lauderdale Air and Sea Show, the Fleetweek and now as the ‘Air Show’.

Yesterday while paddling an 18 mile loop around the city of Ft Lauderdale, I saw the military aircraft doing practice runs including some noisy low flying passes.

This prompted me to pull out some old photographs

because I recalled the tag line above! 😮

Back in the late nineties, I paddled out to the boater viewing area with some friends. First in 1998, when I took my (then) kinda new Findeisen Shearwater surfski out there. It was the place to be because all the action took place over a one mile exclusion zone from the beach, so it was just about overhead! I also recall a South African Airways 747 flying back and forth and we thought that maybe they couldn’t find the airport! 😉

This site features a lot of imagery from the past events.

Enjoy the Air Show!

John James Audubon visited the Florida Keys

exactly 190 years ago this week.

.

.

During his productive five week stay, he also traveled across

Florida Bay to a pristine island bird rookery called Sandy Key.

It was here that he collected many dozens upon dozens of bird specimens. In an era before photography the only way for him to study his birds up close in detail was to shoot them. He had to kill many so as to know the variations within a species, then collect them all and later create his paintings so as to accurately depict them in a proper setting. In his age at the dawn of the industrial revolution, the Everglades and the Earth were still largely untouched and pristine. It was thought the numbers were so large as to be inexhaustible. Well, that was until our own (human) numbers became too large! In any case, life in a frontier land like Florida meant living off the land and the sea. Not only were specimens collected for study, but of course all manner of game, eggs, waterfowl and fish would have been taken for sustenance.

Sandy Key has a long history due to it’s excellent location between Cape Sable and Keys. It has always been a favored refuge for birds of many species, albeit today in a different and greatly diminished form. As part of Everglades National Park since it’s inception, it’s been off limits to visitors, reserved as a bird sanctuary with no public access permitted. Despite these efforts, larger human induced systemic Everglades alterations over the last 200 years have reduced the bird population numbers to a tenth of what were estimated at perhaps two million water birds back then!

.

Audubon described Sandy Key as a large wooded “L” shaped island two hundred years ago. It was full of birds, their nests and eggs, since he arrived in the springtime. Hurricanes also play a big role in shaping and altering South Florida’s environment and landscape. The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 stripped Sandy Key of it’s large trees, and then Hurricane Donna passed overhead in 1960 and splintered off the long northern tip of the island. The resulting much smaller island was named Carl Ross Key, and again most of the vegetation was stripped from Sandy Key itself. Carl Ross then became a back country campsite up until 2005, when Hurricane Wilma further split it into two more pieces. This ended camping on Carl Ross Key, and even more recently, Hurricane Irma inundated the area and you can see the impact on Carl Ross Key below. The large black mangrove trees that gave the key it’s profile outline were stressed and are now dying off. Sandy Key proper seems to have withstood that one better!

Carl Ross Key remains in an even more diminished state and is currently a seasonal day use only area!

.

So while the bird numbers have diminished, they are by no means absent! One of the joys of spending quality time outdoors in the Everglades backcountry is seeing wildlife carry on unfettered outside the busy world of people. The area is still very remote and it’s possible to visit this locale to spend a day paddling on western Florida Bay. It’s not a trip for novices or for those unprepared however. Starting from Flamingo at the end of the Park road, a day journey of a minimum of about 20 miles round trip is required! The shortest path is across a very large flats bank known as First National Bank, so planning for high tide is very necessary – lest you will get stuck for hours! An even longer trip (pictured) can also include Cape Sable. Alternately, splitting this route into two days with an overnight camp out at East Cape may make more sense for many paddlers.

To familiarize yourself with Florida Bay, I suggest reading through:

The island in the background is Sandy Key, which is a permanent bird sanctuary.
Carl Ross is now a seasonal day use only area!

.

Back in 1832, there was no town of Flamingo on the mainland, so Audubon had a crew that rowed him about 25 miles across Florida Bay up from Indian Key to reach the bird colonies at Sandy Key!

So from the many specimens he harvested, Audubon’s world famous bird portraits known as the “Birds of America“ were created.

He was so excited about all the wildlife that he wrote:

“Seldom have I experienced greater pleasures than when on the Florida Keys,

under a burning sun, after pushing my bark for miles over a soapy flat,

I have striven all day long, tormented by myriads of insects,

to procure a heron new to me, and have at length succeeded in my efforts.”

.

The Birds of America was compiled between 1827 to 1838, and included several portraits of the birds from Sandy Key. Audubon’s masterpiece was printed on the largest pages possible at the time, at 29 1/2 by 39 1/2 inches. The completed works of 435 watercolors sold in two volumes for $1,000.00 !

By the later 19th century plume hunting was very big business in the Everglades and South Florida in general. Outrage over wholesale slaughter of shorebirds by the millions prompted the earliest conservation efforts with the passage of laws to curtail the millinery trade. In fact, in 1905, Guy Bradley was hired to serve as the first Audubon game warden. In 1905 he was shot and killed by poachers in Florida Bay, just outside of Flamingo. The same year the National Audubon Society was founded. Today the Tropical Audubon Society continues locally to advocate for conservation, education and preservation of our wetlands and wildlife.

Nearly 200 years later, the same species are still making a living

in the Everglades, the Keys and islands and mud flats of Florida Bay!

There is only one Earth

and

there are no other Everglades on the Earth.

.

“There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth, remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them; their vast glittering openness, wider than the enormous visible round of the horizon, the racing free saltness and sweetness of the their massive winds, under the dazzling blue heights of space. They are unique also in the simplicity, the diversity, the related harmony of the forms of life they enclose. The miracle of the light pours over the green and brown expanse of saw grass and of water, shining and slow-moving below, the grass and water that is the meaning and the central fact of the Everglades of Florida. It is a river of grass.”

There’s no love lost here, mylar balloons and the Everglades do not mix.
All that trash – the ugly side of kayaking in Miami!

.

What goes up must come down.

Helium filled mylar balloons are typically used only once to celebrate birthdays or mark other occasions. Sadly it’s the kind of trash that can be found even in the most pristine and remote parts of the Everglades.

There’s a lot of beauty left, and nature always regenerates itself.

If we can only keep from choking it!

Once out past the first line of keys outside Flamingo,

it’s sometimes possible to go for days without

hearing any background noises whatsoever!

🙂

When sounds do happen it’s usually a plane high overhead or a boater somewhere in the distance and fades away quickly. So even though Florida Bay is surrounded by a busy world of people, once inside it’s like a step back into time. It’s easy to imagine what the string of Florida Keys must have been like before all the islands were connected by bridges.

Florida Bay is a step back in time

and just outside the world of people!

Kayaking to Dry Rocks Reef – a Pilgrimage to find the “Christ of the Abyss” off Key Largo!

.

There’s no question that Jesus has a powerful draw – spiritually, figuratively and literally. Six miles offshore from Key Largo lies the “Christ of the Abyss”, a submerged nine foot tall bronze statue of Jesus Christ. It’s a very popular draw for tourists, snorkelers, divers and boaters. It’s one of the most popular snorkel and dive destinations in the Keys and certainly inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The “Christ of the Deep” as it’s also called is also a part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and as such special regulations apply.

The statue is actually one of three worldwide that are underwater. It is in fact the third casting from the same mold and was commissioned for Italian dive equipment manufacturer Egidio Cressi, who then donated it to the Underwater Society of America. The Society, in turn presented the sculpture to the then newly formed John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo in the early 1960’s.

Be sure to check out this cool underwater

Why paddle out there?

Well, one reason is that because it’s there and it is doable. Another is that a trip like this really does feel like a Pilgrimage of sorts to see something unique and special. I’m not particularly religious, but there was certainly a nice spiritual aspect to this endeavor.

Finally, as a photographer, I really wanted to capture all of this!

Cape Florida – Fowey Rocks – Soldier Key!

Once I cleared Cape Florida, it’s all open water with some deep channels. Big yachts cruise through here at top speed, which can be unnerving.

I can take comfort in three things:

  1. Staying on course and paddling at a good pace thereby minimizing time spent in any one channel.
  2. Flying my “Not-a-dive-flag” on a 6 foot mast for maximum visibility.
  3. Convincing myself that the captains piloting these yachts are competent professionals, alert and sober!

.

The distances involved made for a nice workout and the triangle

points provided me with many photographic opportunities!

Paddling just as easy as 1 – 2 – 3 ? Perhaps, or perhaps not!
Escape from Babylon into the Ten Thousand Islands.

.

This trip added up to about 84 miles with a nice progression

of  11, 20, 25 and 28 mile days.

A memorable escape into the the Ten Thousand Islands of the Everglades!

The Ten Thousands Islands of southwest Florida have a rich human history that dates back thousands of years. For instance, the Calusa Native Americans prospered here, living off the bounty of the coastal marine zone. Rare in human history, they achieved an advanced level of civilization that was not centered on agriculture. They also left us plenty of evidence of just how much, and how well they ate in the form the “midden mounds”. These are basically garbage heaps, of mostly shells, some reaching very large proportions! The remoteness and isolation of the 10K attracted white settlers in the last 150 years to eek out a living, often on top of those old Calusa shell mounds. Some of the so called settlers were actually seeking a place to escape to, to evade the law, perhaps permanently.

In more recent times, access to the 10000 Islands has become codified with the creation of Everglades National Park and other wildlife sanctuaries. Conveniently spaced campsites which can be “reserved” months ahead of time serve to give a familiar structure to an otherwise wild place. A few people still make a living out there, mostly to get others in and out and help them get the most out of the area.

Still, there are a few hidden gems left where the original story continues!

Cape Florida to Boca Chita Key route across the “Safety Valve” of Biscayne Bay is all open water paddling.
Kayak Miami: Bill Baggs to Boca Chita across the “Safety Valve” on Biscayne Bay.

.

Bill Baggs to Boca Chita Key:

An alternate route across the “Safety Valve” on Biscayne Bay.

.

The “Safety Valve” is about 10 miles of shallow tidal flats with dozens of small channels running across it, east – west with the tide flow. A LOT of water moves through here with the tide flow, exchanging waters from Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Paddling over the Safety Valve presents many advantages over the “cross the bay” southern route in my opinion. Firstly, once over the shallows, you won’t encounter many power boaters and certainly no speeding super yachts! Most you’ll see smaller flats type boats because this is prime area for fishing! Second, if you have time, there are plenty of places to snorkel or swim. Also, it just feels really neat to be out there surrounded by the flats, shoals and small channels. It’s still open water paddling, but it feels more cozy and personal.

This is a kind of semi urban paddling, where you can get away from the city and yet always see the Miami area skyline on the horizon.

Once out there on the undeveloped barrier islands of

Biscayne National Park, you are on island time!

The shifting sands of time – Beach erosion and re-nourishments in Dania Beach.

.

The normally quiet and beautiful

Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park

has undergone a radical transformation!

Formerly known as John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, it also includes Whiskey Creek – a very popular paddling spot.  The Park is the last remaining undeveloped beach and quite possibly the nicest natural place in all of Broward County.

With the Grand Opening of Mount Dania, Florida State Park planners

have revealed a new strategy designed to combat beach erosion!

The planners have announced that it is estimated that leaving the sand in this form will allow it to last up to 5x longer than if it was distributed over the beach. The sand has been trucked in from large sand deposit pits near Lake Okeechobee, and about 22,222 loads were needed to build this monumental project.

Additionally, some new beach activities will be allowed. These include the kayak slide, sand rolling, sand boarding, uphill kiting and downhill sand ski racing, among others. However once a beach umbrella has been planted at the top, that visitor shall be allowed to claim the mountain for one hour!

So hurry on over to Dania Beach – today is your first chance to claim your mountain!

Black Point to Boca Chita Key:

Twenty one miles of open water paddling on Biscayne Bay!

Most visitors come by powerboat. a few by a tour boat and fewer still by kayak. This is because it’s a 10 mile open water paddle across Biscayne Bay to get there!

This is a kind of semi urban paddling, where you can get away from the city and yet always see the Miami area skyline on the horizon.

Once out there on the barrier islands of Biscayne National Park,

you are truly on island time!

Fowey Rocks lighthouse – Paddling out to “The eye of Miami”.

.

Fowey Rocks lighthouse was called

“The eye of Miami”

because it’s beacon would guide ships entering the Port of Miami.

Fowey Rocks lighthouse is the northernmost in a chain of six lighthouses positioned over Florida’s very shallow reefs. The other five lighthouses are: Carysfort Light,  Alligator Reef Lighthouse, Sombrero Reef Lighthouse, American Shoal Lighthouse and the Sand Key Lighthouse off Key West! The Florida reef chain proved treacherous for mariners and has been responsible for untold numbers of ship wrecks over the centuries. In fact this lighthouse itself is named after the H.M.S. Fowey which ran aground onto the reef in June 1748.

Fowey Rocks is the last remaining operational lighthouse of the original six Florida Keys offshore reef lights erected in the second half of the 19th century. While the light was still under construction, the steam ship freighter Arratoon Apcar rammed into the reef only 200 yards from the lighthouse on February 20, 1878!

Today this spot is marked with white mooring buoys and is where I tied off my surfski on this fitness adventure dive trip.

Springtime riparian entertainment,

photography and kayaking in New Mexico.

Northern New Mexico is a sunny kind of place – winter, spring and all year round. Because of the high altitude and all the radiant solar heat during the day it’s quite warm and comfortable. The air is light at this altitude, in the winter it feels sterile, like breathing from a SCUBA tank.

It’s also as silent as can be!

In the spring the dry brown hues of winter give way to vibrant greens and fields of beautiful wildflowers! All the new spring growth releases scents that waft through the air along with the sounds of life scurrying around.

There are excellent spring time white water paddling opportunities, but I wanted a slower touring pace to focus on photography and continue to “get to know these places”.

ART of Darkness – Camping with the Stars! Part I

.

The moon’s steady ascent above the horizon is clear evidence of an endless cosmic cycle. From day to night, month to month, epoch to epoch – as our little planet world moves through space and time.

Camping with the Stars means going outside to experience the night as all the wild creatures of the earth do, or as closely as modern western society humans can. It is to step away from, and to go outside the world of people. It means to look up at the vast infinity above full of billions and billions of stars and feel humbled. It means to connect with the power of the infinite and transcend our daily, busy modern lives. It also means to stay up close and connected to the rhythms of the heavens and of the earth!

Remote camping under the full moon is a beautiful

experience not easily forgotten!

Carysfort Reef Lighthouse – paddling into upper Keys nautical history!

.

You can’t actually see Carysfort Light from the seat of the kayak when you first set out.

Carysfort Reef Lighthouse is the oldest of all the Keys offshore lighthouses constructed in the 19th century that is still standing. It became operational in 1852 and replaced the lightship “Florida” which was tending that duty with limited success. It was also the first to use the iron screw pile construction method that has proven to stand the test of time.

Carysfort Reef and lighthouse are named after the H.M.S. Carrysford (note change in spelling) which ran aground on the reef on October 23, 1770. However this reef also carries the distinction of being the site of the oldest recorded shipwreck in North America, that of the H.M.S. Winchester on September 24, 1695. The wreck was not discovered until 1938, and further salvage into the 1950s yielded many artifacts including several of her cannons and many valuable artifacts.

Carysfort Reef Light is the longest serving of all the Keys lighthouses, having been in continuous operation from 1852 to 2014.

Stay hydrated at Alligator Reef Light, and please don’t panic!
Kayaking to Alligator Light Reef (lighthouse) .. of Fishes, Wreckers, Pirates and Keys History!

.

The reef and light were named after the USS Alligator which shipwrecked there in November of 1822, although it would be another fifty years until the light was built in 1873! It is a beautiful and sturdy Victorian era tower, standing 136 feet tall, and has survived several major hurricanes and was an operational lighthouse/beacon until the summer of 2014!

For this trip I chose the “Mojito”, an RTM Disco sit on top kayak. This is probably the nicest handling inexpensive plastic kayak for paddlers under 175 lbs. Granted, it’s a very wet ride, but this is actually a plus in the tropical heat. With the addition of thigh straps, it responds much like a proper sea kayak and is great to learn and practice kayaking and rescue skills. It’s also easy to roll and an excellent surf/play boat for South Florida waters!

I hope you’ve enjoy the fine views from the top!

US Navy submarine about two miles offshore Dania Beach, Florida.

.

I’ve been occasionally seeing this sub off Dania Beach for months, if not years. Probably just conducting exercises or testing, but last week they seemed to be out there every single day!

It’s always in the same area, just south of Port Everglades inlet, about a couple miles offshore. Seems to run a short north – south course paralleling the coast.

Once I spotted it, I paddled out about a mile offshore in my surfski to where the white reef mooring buoys are. The sub was still at least a mile away and heading due south with a police escort.

Thanks to reader feedback, I found out that the sub is conducting undersea mapping and other exercises. It uses special detection devices to determine the acoustical and electromagnetic signatures of nearby ships. It’s a part of the South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility, i.e. the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The ship itself is a large nuclear powered Virginia-class attack submarine, and here’s a video of a similar one heading out of Port Everglades back in 2015!

That coastline is the quiet* and beautiful Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park (MJ Park for short), which also includes Whiskey Creek – a very popular paddling spot.

The Park, formerly known as John U. Lloyd Beach State Park is the last remaining undeveloped beach and quite possibly the nicest natural place in all of Broward County!

(* Quiet not available on weekends!)
